What the Bambu Lab firmware fight means if you print for money
Bambu Lab won the consumer 3D printing market on engineering. CoreXY motion instead of a bed-slinger, an enclosed chamber on the P1S, X1 and H2 machines, flow calibration and lidar-assisted first-layer inspection, and the AMS unit for multi-material prints. As Bambu Lab listed its range in September 2026, that runs from the A1 Mini and A1 through the P1S and X1C up to the H2D and H2S. If you print parts for customers, these machines get you predictable output faster than anything else at the price.
Then in January 2025 a firmware update introduced Authorization Control, and the calculation changed.
What actually happened
The update required third-party software to talk to the printer through a proprietary intermediary, Bambu Connect, rather than directly. That broke the existing direct integration used by Orca Slicer, which a large part of the community had standardised on. Bambu Lab justified the change on security grounds, citing on the order of 30 million unauthorised requests a day against its infrastructure along with DDoS activity.
The response was not gentle. The maintainer of Orca Slicer declined to adopt Bambu Connect. Coverage across the 3D printing press and the wider open-source community treated it as a vendor closing a previously open interface. Bambu Lab later shipped a Developer Mode that restores MQTT and FTP access to the printer, which is a real concession, though an opt-in one rather than a return to the previous default.
Why this matters more to a business than to a hobbyist
If a printer is your hobby, a firmware argument is an annoyance. If a printer is how you deliver a customer order on a date you have promised, it is a supply-chain question. The hardware was never the fragile part. The fragile part is the toolchain around it, and a toolchain that depends on one vendor's cloud is a dependency you did not price into the quote.
Three things follow from that. First, keep a local path that works. Turn on Developer Mode and confirm you can drive the printer over the local network with the vendor's cloud out of the loop, and test that before you need it rather than on the morning a client is waiting.
Second, keep the slicer profiles portable. Print profiles are where a shop's knowledge actually lives, in the temperatures and flow numbers and retraction settings that made one material behave. Export them, put them in version control, and know how to rebuild them in a second slicer.
Third, do not let one vendor own a production step. That is not an argument against buying Bambu Lab. It is an argument for being honest that a firmware release you do not control sits between you and a delivery date, and for having a written answer for the week it goes wrong.
